Many years ago, I was part of a gathering on Spanish Beach in West Vancouver. After the usual breath-taking sunset, the outline of Vancouver Island and other smaller islands could be seen across the Georgia Strait. This idiot starts to hit on a hot yet empty-headed graduate student, telling her that the dark shape with the twinkling lights was Japan. "Really...that is so awesome", she replied. I just groaned and grabbed another Granville Island ale out of the cooler, and continued on building my levee.
